Therapy With A Healing Touch

Your body. It’s an amazing machine that operates nonstop, rarely falling short of the demands you place upon it every day. To keep it working at its optimal level, it’s important to give your body a break and undo the damage of life’s daily physical and mental demands. And that’s where I can help—with knowledgeable and intuitive massage therapy techniques that can bring you relief by alleviating everything from sore muscles and headaches to anxiety and depression. Let’s take better care of your body starting today!

REAL BODY TALK

It’s true, regular massage sessions can help improve blood pressure, circulation and posture, not to mention the boost it provides your immune system.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MASSAGE

Here’s a little insight into my five primary styles of massage and the areas they target to alleviate your specific pain or provide the relaxation you seek.

Trigger Point

You may have heard of massage therapists working on “trigger points” and wondered what they are exactly. A trigger point is a hypersensitive spot in a tight band of muscle. Interestingly, most people have trigger points deriving from neurologic pain that, quite often, refers the pain away from the actual trigger point itself. So, for example, a trigger point in your upper traps may refer pain in the neck that results in a headache.

Deep Tissue

Designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and connective tissues, this type of massage is my most often requested. With this approach, I work on both the superficial and deep layers of muscles, fascia and other structures. I often recommend deep tissue massage for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity (such as athletes and bodybuilders) and patients who have sustained a physical injury.

TMJ Massage

Ever experienced a clicking in your jaw or pain that radiates from your jaw, neck or upper back? TMJ could be the cause of what’s called myofascial pain—and the most common form of TMJ Disorder is discomfort in the muscles and connective tissue coverings of the jaw, neck and upper back. An entire session can be spent on this type of massage. It’s my belief that most of us spend our day with clenched jaws, so relaxing it can often result in your entire body following suit.

Relaxation and Recovery

With this type of massage, we’re more focused on your overall well-being rather than on physical change in the body structure. That said, while my work often tends to focus on the clinical aspects of massage, I always try to incorporate relaxation and a well-being type of massage into any work I do. You really do get the best of both worlds with this approach that allows you to receive the deeper work needed at times while simply enjoying a relaxing massage.

Sports Massage

I can’t stress enough how much regular massage can help prevent injuries. With that said, sports massage therapy is geared toward all types of athletes—from those who are weight training and jogging to those doing Cross Fit classes and IronMan races. Sports massage focuses on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements.

MORE ON JAMES

James Dustin & MaxHello and welcome. When it comes to caring for your body with the help of a professional, your complete and implicit trust in their expertise, training and experience is important. As an Atlanta-based licensed massage therapist with both a fitness training and nutritional counseling background, you’re in very good hands when you schedule a massage with me. As a 2002 graduate of the Clinical Program at the Atlanta School of Massage, one of the highest rated neuromuscular massage schools in the country, I bring a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience to my table.

During my intensive education and training, my innate skills in biomechanics and balance were not only recognized by my instructors, but also became a hallmark of my intuitive massage style—a healing approach informed by a lifelong fascination with human anatomy and physiology. In fact, this keen interest in the human body ultimately led to a ten-year partnership with a medical practice where I worked directly with physicians who prescribed massage therapy to their patients. To my mind, this comprehensive approach brings together the very best of Eastern and Western healthcare philosophies on our path to achieving happiness and overall well-being.

After all, at its best, massage is about more than making you feel better. It’s also about figuring out what’s going on with your body and where the source of your pain is emanating from—to not only provide relief during our session together, but also help you figure out how to keep it from coming back. I get so much satisfaction from helping clients who are genuinely happy to see me, knowing we’ll resolve whatever issues they have with real healing that goes beyond the benefits of a relaxing massage. You have my word, I’ll figure out what’s going on and bring you relief that lasts.

TESTIMONIALS

What To Expect

If this is your first massage (or even your fortieth), I want you to know what the experience will be like during our session together. First and foremost, I see all of my clients as individuals—regardless of their age, race, gender, size, disability and preferred pronouns. Whether you’re straight, gay, bisexual or transgendered, whether you’re a body builder or have some extra pounds, creating a safe space where EVERYONE can feel calm and relaxed is paramount to my approach. I follow all of the American Massage Therapy Association’s Code and Rules of Ethics found here. From there, you can expect the following in my practice:

  • A professional, non-judgmental, non-sensual, full-body or targeted-area massage
  • A peaceful & inviting space-including a warm table, clean sheets, soothing music and quality massage products
  • A preliminary discussion about relief for pain, tension or anything else you’re dealing with
  • Orthopedic testing if your situation requires further assessment before we begin the massage
  • A customized massage plan to address your specific expectations and areas of concern
  • The option to disrobe to your preferred comfort level, you will be professionally draped with a sheet and only the areas being massaged will be exposed throughout our session
  • After your massage you will given a plan to help you continue your treatment and get the most out of your session

Trigger Point

trigger point massage

Trigger point massage therapy is specifically designed to alleviate the source of that pain through cycles of ischemic pressure and release, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitated (PNF) stretching and moist heat. These techniques combined are an effective treatment for trigger points. This kind of work can take time and isn’t always pleasant to receive, so it’s important to take deep breaths throughout and communicate any pain you feel so we can adjust the amount of pressure used and be mindful of your comfort.

Deep Tissue

deep tissue massage

Deep tissue treatments to muscle belly, muscle attachments, tendons and even ligaments are very helpful in breaking up adhesions that cause muscle pain and weakness. What’s more, studies have found that people’s blood pressure fell after a single 45 to 60 minute deep tissue massage. The sessions can often be quite intense as a result of very deliberate and focused work and it’s not uncommon to have pain replaced with a new muscle ache for a day or two after the massage treatment.

TMJ Massage

Several treatment techniques such as ice massage, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapies and intra-oral massage therapy directly aimed at the muscles controlling the temporal mandibular joint may be used in a session targeting TMJ pain. The benefit of these targeted therapies are many, but among them, it can increase circulation, soften fascia, cleanse the tissues, improve nutrition to the cells and relieve pain.

Relaxation and Recovery

Massage therapy can improve your physical health by relieving tension and stress, giving you more energy to face the challenges of life. Through a time of difficult change, massage therapy can offer emotional support and comfort. Massage therapy cares for your body without judging, creating a safe way to experience positive, non-sexual touch to help you reconnect and experience your body as a source of good things.

Sports Massage

Sports massage can be used to reduce recovery time and fatigue, promote flexibility and improve endurance. Most important, it also helps prevent injuries and prepares the body for optimal performance during training and after an event. For anyone participating in regular physical activity, sports massage therapy every week or two may be a great addition to your normal regimen. Keep pain from coming in the first place!
